Advance Notice of Ovulation is Key to Achieving Pregnancy

When it comes to fertility, timing is everything. At the time the egg is released on your ovulation date, sperm must already be present and waiting for fertilization to occur. Because sperm can live for a number of days inside a woman, advance notice of your ovulation date is key to achieving pregnancy; the more advance notice you have, the more opportunities you’ll have to make love and the greater your odds of conception will be.

How Can You Predict When Ovulation Will Occur?

Two commonly measured hormones in ovulation prediction are Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Estrogen. Urine-based ovulation tests, for example, measure the surge in LH which occurs around 24-48 hours before ovulation. This means that with urine-based ovulation tests, you may be able to correctly identify up to 2 fertile days prior to ovulation.

Other methods of ovulation prediction measure the estrogen surge that occurs prior to ovulation. Because the estrogen surge precedes the LH surge, correctly identifying the estrogen surge provides greater advance notice of ovulation, providing you with a greater window of opportunity to conceive.

Identifying the Estrogen Surge in Saliva – the Ideal Ovulation Prediction Method

The estrogen surge can first be detected in your saliva, and only later is present in sufficient quantities in urine such that it can be measured. This is precisely how the OvaCue is able to provide greater advance notice of ovulation than any other ovulation prediction method: it measures the change in electrolyte levels present in your saliva which correspond directly to the estrogen surge.

Advanced Notice + Accuracy = OvaCue

While critical, advance notice represents just half of what you need to plan intercourse successfully. Since the window for successful fertilization can be as short as a day or less, you also need accurate prediction as the time of ovulation draws close. Some fertility monitors give lengthy notice, but also give "false positives" eight or more days in advance and may continue giving false positives even after ovulation has occurred.
